Use the toggle switch below the color swatches (or the Q key) to go in and out of Quickmask mode. This mode is very similar to alpha channels in the Channels tab, but uses a temporary and unnamed alpha channel. When you exit Quickmask mode, the mask is turned into a selection and the mask itself is discarded.
