A grayscale image indicating opacity, but unlike an alpha mask it's not tied to any particular layer.

You can make an alpha channel from a selection with the "Alpha Mask" button in the Channels panel, and conversely, you can make a selection from an alpha channel by Command-clicking its thumbnail.

Visible alpha channels get a semi transparent red preview on the main canvas.
