The most fundamental concept in a paint app like this. The layers "composite" from bottom to top, each one according to its selected blend mode, visibility and opacity.

A tour of the UI features on each layer:

• The eye, turns visibility on and off. You can option-click the eye to give that layer solo visibility, and you can drag across multiple eyes to hide/show several in one gesture.
• The thumbnail. Has corner brackets when it's selected. You can command-click the thumbnail to select its opacity.
• The mask thumbnail (if present). Command-click this to select its luminosity. This also gets corner brackets if it's selected. Only the layer itself or the mask can be selected, not both.
• Name. Double click to rename.
• On the far right, if you hover, is a lock icon.
